Some users in this forum seem to think so.

I personally think that George Best is a legend but some users think that because he didn't win the world cup he cannot be considered a true legend.

When Northern Ireland qualified for the World Cup in 1982, George Best was aged 36 and considered too old for the team.

Even Diego Maradona has said that Best is his all-time favourite player.

What do you think?

Thank you.

As some users have said, Cryuff is a legend(he never led his team to WC glory).. A lot of countries have one or two great players(ie. future legends) but just don't have the infrastructure, resources or whatever to develop into a WC contender. Also, WC's are held one month every 48 months; thus, a player can only contend in a few WC's in his entire career. Thus, that criterion is a rather weak one to become a legend. Although, some will argue that the WC is the biggest tournament and legens shine when the pressure is the greatest.
GREAT Question!

No and the reasons why (Some of them):

George Best
Ferenc Puskas
Marco Van Basten
Ian Rush
Liam Brady
Kenny Dalglish
Jimmy Johnstone
Billy Bremner
John Charles
Ryan Giggs
Neville Southall
Lev Yashin
Paul Gascoigne
Glen Hoddle
Matt Le Tissier
Eusebio
Eric Cantona
Peter Schmeichal

I have loads more if you want them but to win the World Cup does not make you a legend. Best is better than 99% of the people who have been in a team that has won the world cup.

Can a wrestler be considered a legend without ever winning a World Championship?, that's like asking "Does Shawn Michaels deserve to be in The Hall of Fame because he hasn't won as much World Titles as some other legends have?", and the answer to both of those questions are... yes! In my opinion it doesn't matter how many World Titles you've won, or if you haven't ever won a World Title, you are a legend when you have given the WWE fans everything you have and put on a show that entertains them. If you are just in the business for the money, and don't care about the company or any of the WWE fans, then they shouldn't be considered legends, legends are people who nobody will forget.

Not necessarily, because a country can have one great player, but the rest of the team isn't as good and they can't back him up to win a cup. Look at the Ivory Coast. If Drogba continues this tear he's been on for the rest of his career, he could be considered a legend. But I doubt the Ivory Coast is going to win the World Cup. I think a legendary player would lead his club team to a league or Cup title, but not necessarily his country to the World Cup.

Personally I don't think so. But you are right some people hold that as criteria to be hailed a legend. I think it's more about what you achieved for and in the sport, how you changed it for the better, stunned people with skill and left them with memories that are not forgotten and last past the particular generation they played in. Zibi Boniek from Poland, the German Rummenigge, and many others were arguably the best of their time, but I doubt hardly anyone knows their names. George is up there too. Definitely in my best ever ten. Nice question!!

no..they don't have to win the world cup to be considered a true legend..cryuff never did..but he was there..he led his team and ppl from all around the world saw him..it was enough for him to be acknowledge as one of football greatest..george best he was great but by just being great at club level might not impress everyone..maradona might know what he's talking about cuz he was a footballer himself but for the rest of the world they never saw him at the world cup..

winning a world cup certainly helps your status. but I think your domestic performance is what really makes you a legend. and George Best is most certainly a legend.

obviously talking about me, LOL

i think that legends are considered so because they led their teams to world cup victory. not in all cases, but look at Pele and Maradona, they both did so.
