Looks like I have a job offer from a municipal government. Went through two rounds of interviews where my supervisor-to-be and my co-worker-to-be and HR manager set in.
Now, once I start is it legal for me to give a little gift (something like $50 gift card with a thank you card in person or via postal mail) to my supervisor? She seemed to have been the decision maker and was the one who called me back after two rounds of the interview.
Can giving of gift card interpreted as "bribery" and get me into trouble? I don't think my being a minority worked to my benefit because hiring manger is a non-white woman and there were non-white people in my competition.

I don't think it is "bribery". But the gift card is not a good idea. Maybe some gift will be better. Have a look at the following website, and good luck to you.

No, no, no ... it will be open to the worst kind of interpretation, especially as it's money, even if you mean it well.

On your first day, say something like 'Thank you for trusting me to do this job ... I'm looking forward to it ... any advice you can give me on how to do well would be much appreciated.' That should be quite enough.

If after a year you're still there, still working for the same supervisor, and happy, then you could perhaps find a little gift that costs very little in terms of money (it's really important that money isn't seen to change hands) but indicates a lot of thought on your part - perhaps you could find a CD or book that she'd like, but nothing more personal, and just say that this is to commemorate a very happy year of working for her. But you don't even need to do that - you must at all costs avoid the appearance of bribery or favouritism.

Not illegal, but not a good plan. If you do anything, simply walk into your bosses office, and thank her for the opportunity. Gifts generally don't belong in the office environment.

No. A simple "thank you" is adequate.
You can best thank this person by doing the kind of job they thought you would do when they hired you.

I would definitely advise to not do so. A thank-you card might be appropriate, but nothing of intrinsic value.
