It's an HP dv5000. I just sent it in to get fixed and it came back a few days ago and still isn't working too well. I'm probably going to send it back in again, because it's under warranty, but I want to unfreeze it now. There's not a restart button or hole that you can put a paper clip in on the laptop. I've tried pressing and holding the power button and it doesn't do anything. Should I remove the battery? It's easy to do, but I don't want to mess up the computer more.

Unplug the power cable and remove the battery.
I don't like it since it can corrupt file.....but if you don't have any other options, take this very small risk. Take a recovery cd/dvd of windows xp cd with you in very rare case the windows operating system will be damaged.

Occasionally, when I get that type of freeze, I hold the power button in for 6-7 seconds. Eventually, it will go off.

Can you restart with Control+Alt+Del and go into Safe Mode?
You can check the device driver from there.

- Click Start, and then click Shut down.
- Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu appears.
- For some machines, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows Startup Menu.
- Enter the number for Safe mode, and then press ENTER.

To open Device Manager, click Start,
point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Hardware tab,
click Device Manager.
Right-cl the item to be checked and select Properties.

You should be told whether or not the item is working properly. You can also update the driver from here.

Find an hp help website. if even holding the external power button hasn't worked than you might just need a new computer.

Remove the battery if you have to. That will not harm it. Hopefully you will then be able to restart it normally.
