bauxite is a (mainly) refractory ore for aluminium. it is first mined in areas which have undergone tropical weathering (for example areas such as Western Australia, Jamaica and Guyana) which depleats other elements and in effect enriches the residual with aluminium.
the bauxite is refined to alumina, then further processed using a high amount of energy to aluminium
