you just add up the columns from right to left
8+6=14 so write a 4 in the rightmost column and carry the 1 to the next left one
1+2=3 and add the carried over 1, so 3+1=4, now write this to the left of the first 4
2+3=5 and there was nothing carried over, so write this in the left column
and the final number is 544
