I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with a NVIDIA GeForce FX5200, 128 MB. I want to upgrade to something with 512 MB, budget is $250, I am not doing gaming, and have a monitor capable of supporting 1680 x 1050 resolution. I will be working with hi-res photography, video and audio (music) editing. Can not get a new PC; just stuck with what I have for now and can afford a graphics upgrade. OS is WinXP Pro. I can find an AGP card, but wonder if PCI-E will work.

PCI-E will not work on that motherboard, but you do have AGP options. There are several models featuring 512MB in AGP, well within your budget.

Here is one of them:

I recommend paying for a sparkling motherboard with a PCI show slot. you will not locate terrific AGP image enjoying cards, and that i don't think of PCI image enjoying cards even exist. you will in all probability prefer to enhance your motherboard sometime besides, so why not do it now?

If you have an available PCI slot it will. Don't try to run both at the same time however.

You can't. You have to change your MotherBoard.
