WHAT the heck is growing on my spackling compound?
My drywall (plaster) spackling compound has been sealed up for a year last time I used it. When I opened it yesterday, it had what looks like mold (fuzzy, white) growing on it. What can survive on spackling compound (gypsum and water)? What does it metabolize??? You tellin me it eats gypsum?

I just went out to my shed and read the contents of my tub of drywall compound. Yes, it's mostly gypsum but it also contains wheat flour. As I'm sure you know, fungi exist on decomposing organic material and water. I couldn't even guess exactly which fungus or mold you've discovered.

Isn't that crazy? Just goes to show you how persistent life is...if there is food of some type, something will show up to eat it. And EVERYTHING ends up as food for the decomposers.....
