if your car is like mine its quite simple as long as its the factory fitted immobiliser and not an after market one. if you phone ur local dealer and ask for your immobiliser over-ride code they will no what you mean if you explain your situation and should be able to supply you with it maybe for a small charge. once you have the code go to your car and lock it with your key you will be ready to start. First of all if your code is for example 4582 unlock the car 4 times always turning the key back to the middle after each turn, then lock the car 5 time using the same process then unlock 8 and lock 2 using the same process then open the car an your horn should sound which signifies that the immobiliser is overridden and you should be able to start you car from now on without using the alarm fob. don't worry you don't have to do this every morning once the immobiliser is overriden it is out of commission. but its best to keep the code just in case you ever need it e.g if the battery goes flat etc

Providing you know your four figure key code the operation is simple. Insert the key into the lock and turn it to the left the number of times of the first figure allowing it to return to the central position each time. Then turn it to the right the same number of times as the second figure. Left again for the third figure and then to the right for the fourth figure. This should deactivate the immobiliser and allow you to drive the car.

Wow thats a bit steep, I only paid £30 to have my remote re-tuned! Land Rover Freelander, but the same remote.
Try another garage, try an independant, not a ROVER garage.
Hope you get better luck there.

lift the bonnet locate the alarm and pull the block connector which joins it to the main wiring harness apart. failing that stuff a duster in it bind it round with tape and put some carrier bags over it secure with elastic bands to shut it up. auto electrition may be able to sort out and provide a duplicate also programme it. unless it's a manufacturers only alarm system
