Damon killed Nicholson to cut off any potential connection to himself. That is also why he killed the cop that saved him. The cop that killed Damon did so for revenge and retribution for Damon's murdering and deception (you have to figure decapriio either told wahlberg or the envelope he gave the gal was instruction to inform wahlberg of what had happened).
Damon was the bad cop. Decaprio was the good cop...

Jack's character befriended Matt's character as a kid and let him earn extra money, taught him lesson's ect.Matt's character thinks of what Frank said about cop or criminal: When facing a gun what's the difference and decides to be a cop.
Matt's char returns the favor by helping Frank(Jack) out.Tell's him about the tails that follow him ect.Well Leo's char is a violent guy who had everyone in his family(except his dad) as criminals.He is a smart kid and Sargent and staff sarg.(Walberg)think he;s not cop material.They change their mind and decide to put him undercover(just between the 3 of them).
Anyway,Frank tries to be compassionate to Matt's char but shots him after Matt makes a smart comment to him, but Matt's char is wearing a vest and retailiates back.Matt shot the other rat because he lost respect for Frank and probably decided to change his ways.But to late,the staff sarg. figures out it was him who was Franks rat, sneeks into his apartment,and kills Matt.I hope that clarifys it.
