Where we live parking is non-existant,but behind the house is a large car park area for approx 12 cars, with a "private - no parking" sign, but only ever used by a max of 3 cars, but i can't find out who owns it, as i would like to see if they would rent a space, this is in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire

It's simple you go to the land registry department and enquire as to who owns the land. Try contacting them or at least checking out there web site. Unfortunately i don't know there URL but if you just type in land registry you will come across there web site.
Oh one other thing if no one is registered as the owner of the land then you are legally entitled to claim ownership of the land.
The land registry will give you all the finer details.
Good luck and i hope you succeed.
All the best,
Andrew D.

Ultimately the land registry holds the records for ALL land in the Uk, but you may not be able to get access to it.
The other way you could do it is go to your local council, check the voters register against peroperties surrounding the land, and see if any of the land is registered to a company.
then have a look at the council held maps (they have got them despite what the daft bird at the counter says) and see which of your neighbours this land is registered to.

hope that gives you a starting point

Go to the county clerks office and look at the tax records of that property. Another way- Any Real Estate Agent can look it up for you. Good luck!
