Use some steel wool or a kitchen scrubber with a little all purpose oil.

Go to your local hardware store and buy "Naval Jelly" . Read the instructions carefully, this is some caustic stuff. Oil the hammer lightly after cleaning, to prevent future rusting.

spray some wd40 on the hammer let it set for about 10 minutes then rub with still wool then wipe with a rag repeat until all the rust is gone

You can either sand it off with 220 sand paper or use rust remover- but if you want to do it quickly be VERY VERY CAREFUL- dip the head in muratic acid for a few seconds-CAUTION--VAPOR LIKE GAS WILL BE PRESENT --LAY TOOL DOWN AND GET AWAY. Clean with wd40 or similar agent-not water..

rub it in sand ,or sandblaster ,or wire brush ,or steal wool, or go to a hardware store and pickup some (ironout) or CLR.works just great ,and is much easier than some of the other suggestions .CLR RUST REMOVER !!

you can use brasso let it soak, then sand hammer head Or just sand it off.After you get it clean be sure to Allie a thin coat of oil.
