how to program a touch an infra red sensitive light switch?

the one i used to have had no programming needed, just tap the touch plate to turn it on or off, hold your finger on the touch plate to cause the light to cycle through the stages of dimming up or down.
the IR remote had a single button on it that you used exactly like you used the touchplate
