Throw them into the washing machine with 2 large bathtowels and wash like you would any other load. The bathtowels keep the machine in balance. Then dry on the floor (laying the shoes on their sides) in front of the fridge (that is where the heat is). They should be dry by morning and ready to go.

NO NO NO!!!!!!!
if you put them in the washer........the color will eventually fade and the material begins to crack............especially if they are leather............which means you will have to buy more/new shoes sooner.
i have several pairs of sneakers that ive had for several years and they look pretty decent.......when we go to kids parties and i want to wear a "kick back" look my friends and family usually ask me when did i get those "kicks" and i am POSITIVE they had seen them at least a year or two before.
first take out the insole....(that padding inside the shoe)
what i do is get a old toothbrush..........get some laundry detergent......and a drop or two of bleach(only if they are white)
and make a "PASTE" with this and dip the toothbrush in the mixture you can use a wet toothbrush if its easier to use......and gently scrub away....you will find this takes off even those stubborn grass stains on the rubber sole.
than you might have to do this twice in the same washing but it is definitely worth it. you need to really concentrate on the stitching on the outside if the shoe.
this method that i use really works and your shoes WILL last a lot longer
the laces you can throw in the washer....as i always do
well good luck to you and i hope that you find your sneakers in the cleanest form possible after you decide what method to use.
Ps
as for colored sneakers you can use the same method except replace the chlorine bleach foe NON-chlorine
=).

First take out the laces and place them as well as the trainers(sorry...sneakers) in a pillow case, then place int the washing machine. This is so they don't damage the drum. When the cycle has finished stuff the sneakers with newspaper or a few dish cloths to keep their shape...hey presto!!!

Ok this is going to sound weird but the best even better than shoe cleaner is white toothpaste with a peroxide in it. Apply it and rub it in a circular motion, leave it on for about 5 minutes take a damp cloth and wipe off in circular motions. It works great!

there are two ways to wash sneakers.
the first way is to do it by hand. you take the shoelaces out and put it in the sink and put bleach in it for 5-10 minutes. while that's cleaning, you take a clean tooth brush and start scrubbing with soap and water, until it's clean.
the second way is to put it in the washing machine. put it on regular and then in the dryer. the only different is that in the dryer your shoes shrink!
