Get a piece of sheet metal. Slide it under the shingles above the hole, and nail it in place. Done until spring.

Get some Henry's Roof Patch and with a piece of plywood cut slightly larger than the hole cover all four edges with the Henry's and stick it down. Add a few roofing nails around the edges and add some more Henry's. This product works in wet conditions you can patch a hole in the rain and it seals. Caulk needs a dry surface to form a bond. You can get this at any hardware or home improvement store.

Plywood over the hole will work. Apply a heavy bead of good quality silicone exterior sealant around the edge of the plywood. Then, cover it with shingles.
