In Vista, a more 'finalized' IPv6 protocol is available. One was available for XP but, in my experience, it is flaky. The IPv6 protocol available in 2003 server is a bit more mature but IPv6 in Vista should contain most of the more recent changes to the protocol and some of the features missing from the 2003 server and XP versions. One other change is that, in Vista, IPv6 is loaded and enabled by default. That won't help users much since almost no network providers in the US provide IPv6 connections for users.

A detailed list of Vista specific IPv6 information is her:

IPv6, in general, offers the following that aren't in IPv4:

longer addresses - 128 bits vs 32 bits meaning many, many more addresses will be available (this equates to 12 octets, not 1)
authentication and data integrity options
better QoS options
Anycast is an options
Integrated routing functions

and a bunch more.

Essentially, it is an entirely separate protocol that takes a lot of the best features of another protocol (IPv4) and adds other features while maintaining a 'backward compatibility' to IPv4...but a lot of it works a lot like IPv4. Most routing protocols had to be tweaked a great deal to work with IPv6.

IPv6 addressses look like:

2001:39:4eba:4286:220:a6ff:fe9e:b422 versus the usual IPv4 addresses looking like 192.168.0.1. Some IPv6 addresses can look a bit different (fe80::5efe:192.168.0.1) when IPv6 is set up to work with IPv4.

v4 is what is currently being used now and means there four octects in the ip address. such as 192.168.123.100 V6 puts an additional octect in there. This technology is something new that is coming out, but is not yet supported around the world. I would recommend using v4.
