I understand the that one is the city, and the other is the state.

But why do they have the same name?

New York, New York. Instead of being like Detroit, Michigan, Chicago, Illinois. etc etc

It just sounds werid

Why would they name the city, the same as the state?

Or are they any other states like that, that have a city the same name as the site ( Michigan, Michigan, or Illinois, Illinois???

to Angell:

Yeah but NEW YORK CITY is not the proper name of the city.

It is New York.

We just adopted saying city, to make it less confusing.

You would write. Detroit City, Michigan...and a letter would still get there.

But if you look on a Map...it will say NEW YORK (for the city) not New York City.

Kansas City is the full name of a city. It will say that on a map.

Im sure they are probaly maps out there that say NYC, but that is just to make it less confusing.

If you live in a city, you can add city to the end of it...example...I live in New Baltimore, MI. Still could write New Baltimore City, MI and it would still get there. Of if you live in a Township. Chesterfield, MI. You still could wrtie Chesterfield Township, MI.

Get what im saying???

There are two Kansas Citys, on opposite sides of the Kansas-Missouri border (similar to Texarkana, which is on the Arkansas-Texas border, or Bristol, on the Virginia-Tennessee border). The one that has all of the sports teams (Chiefs and Royals) is the one in Missouri, and it is not the state capital. Jefferson City is.

Beyond Kansas City, Kansas and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, there really aren't any other city-state combinations with the same name besides New York.

Well Kansas City is the Capital of Missouri so I don't know if there is another Kansas City in Kansas. But there is Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

i learned that the city was named before the state, and when the state was established, the "government" wanted it to remain New York as the state and the city because it was were the government and house sat and so it would be a lot of work and trouble to change the name everywhere it was posted, and moreover come up with a name that everyone agreed with

so they just kept it

heh, It's like "Manchester VA" there are Manchesters all over like there are Richmonds and Yorks and Sunnydales etc. People just run out of things to name it. Besides, when the country was forming, many people considered VA to make up most of the middle Atlantic coast and then the boundaries just got smaller from there. New England was considered to be like...Penn. and Florida and Georgia made the south.. Maybe Ny, Ny was considered NY, and then they expanded adding other territories that were named other names untill the state formed and they just kept the name.

Actually its not New York, New York
Two ways you can put it on an envelope:
New York City, New York
New York, NY

It just happens to be that way, I have always called it New York City. I lived in the Bronx and that is how we looked at the City [New York City]...

Because the people who live there are so stupid they need something simple to remember when speaking of where they live. So to make their life easy and everyone else's hard they name the city and state the same name.
