Venomous fish should not be confused with poisonous species, such as the infamous puffer fish, which harbor colonies of toxin-producing bacteria.

Venomous fish produce their own toxins. These fish also inflict their venoms with a delivery mechanism.

The bullrout, lethal freshwater stonefish (The only fish that is so venomous they actually have an antivenom for it), scorpion fish are venomous and at one time legal to own (I am not sure now).

Fresh water rays are poisonous not venomous.Catfish aren't venomus and not all are poison. Southeast Asian waters harbor deadly freshwater cats, but grow way to big for an aquarium...646 pounds

Venomous freshwater fish are mostly limited to catfish with poison on their fin spines. This it true of the majority of catfish to some exent. Truthfully some of the most poisonous are the smaller cory catfish. I know you are probably looking for something really cool like the saltwater loinfish or stargazer but those just don't exist in freshwater conditions.

the freshwater stone fish from austrailia is a venomous fish.

Fresh water sting rays are also, while you can rarely die from a sting,(unless your alergic) the sting will hurt for about 2 weeks and it nearly brought me to tears. Freshwater sting rays are often hard to care for, thats why when i get them i try and sell them ASAP.
