The Smithsonian Institution has never adequately credited Tesla for his invention of radio. Instead they credited Thomas Edison for Tesla's work in alternating current, even though Edison didn't work in that area at all

In this country Tesla is definitely overshadowed by Edison. Both are great men...I would say Tesla is definitely underrated. Mostly because GE has more power than Westinghouse.

You have made some solid points. Tesla actually worked for Edison at one time and Edison was a firm proponent of direct current. Tesla tried to convince Edison to follow the path of alternating current and of course he wouldn’t do so.

Direct current would have required a current generating station every few blocks making unworkable and yet Edison continued to support it. Edison might have won in this contest because he was far better than Tesla at organization and money raising (Tesla was terrible at this.) However, They soon split apart and Tesla (due to the intervention of friends) came into a relationship with Westinghouse (who had lots of money) and with the completion of the Niagara Alternating Current generating station alternating current became the future. Even so, few school teach Tesla’s contribution to this generation of electricity. They certainly don’t teach his inventive efforts in other fields.

Tesla was a true genius. He had the ability to conceive an idea, develop the mathematics, construct the device, and see it run, all in his head without putting anything on paper.

I don't think Edison was given credit for alternating current. Edison knocked alternating current because he had already made quite an investment in direct current. Also, the use of alternating current required far less in the way of generation, transformers etc. And Edison was all in favor of building & selling all that uneccessary equipment. Edison had already built a direct current generator to light NY with too. Thus to Edison, switching to alternating current after he had spent so much time and money with direct current would have made him look like a "dimwitt." (That was pretty good "dimwitt" get it.?)
Edison's angle, which he tried to sell the public on was that AC was dangerous. One way he went about trying to prove this, was to kill by electrification various animals with AC. This got the capital punishment guys interested and thats how we came by the Electric Chair. http://www.voltini.com/id25.htm

Still think Edison was a nice guy?

They never honored Big Don Garlits for drag racing either. How fair is that?
