Thats true, cricket is getting more importance than any other sport. There are many reasons behind that. Its a highly commercialised game around the wolrd and people are ready to throw big bucks to watch it. I mean which channel will buy a five hockey match series between inida and england for 612 million dollars? but when it comes to cricket it happens. I think the more important question is what should be done to promote other games that belong to our own nation. Games like hockey comes to my mind before anything, tennis is another game, soccer (if india makes it to the world cup witihin 21st century). but the way cricket takes over everything in this country is just amazing.

cricket is being given more importance by many people in India and the reason is that that it suits Indian climate very well and the game has a history in India. Been ruled by the British for over 200 years a lot of British traditions have strong roots in India and playing cricket has been a prestigious thing in India. In contrast to its popularity the standard of cricket is not that high partially because coaching is being ignored in most sports and the playing conditions are not conducive to quality cricket. I played cricket since my school days to college and beyond but had never played against any spinner! No one ever taught us how to bowl or bat ! We learned cricket by playing without getting any technical advise on how to work on our weaknesses. And I wasn't living in a village either!!
