I use a pull buoy occasionally in swimming practice and I was wondering if you're supposed to do a flip turn if you're practicing freestyle. My coach hasn't said anything for or against flip turns and I can't tell if the other people in my lane are doing it or not....
Please help! I really need to know this.

You can do a flip turn but it'll vary for each person.

To do a flip turn while using a pull buoy you really need good upper body strength to get you over since you aren't using your legs to kick and help get you over. You also need to push off on the wall which can be a challange for some people depending on their physical abilities.

I do flip turns when I use a pull buoy but some kids in my practice lane don't do them, just like I can't possibly do a flip turn while using fins. The flip turn while pulling is a big proportional thing for a lot of swimmers in how well they can get their body through the water while still maintaining control of themselves.

I'd say if you can do a flip turn while using a pull buoy then do one, but if you can't then that's OK. I've seen a lot of people not do flip turns while pulling and coaches should understand their reasons for not doing flip turns.

yes. do flipturns always. there should never be a time during practice that you DON'T do a flipturn, except for maybe during warm down. When you do flipturns with a pull buoy, it's a good time to work on your push off the wall, gliding, and streamlining (because you're not kicking). All of that off the wall is free speed... you don't have to work at all to gain that distance. Races are won and lost at the turns, so PRACTICE THEM EVERY CHANCE YOU GET!

yes you do a flip turn just like you would if you didn't have the pull buoy except don't kick that's the whole point.

Absolutely! In addition, it is good practice. It will oblige you to keep your knees together while turning. You only need to spread your knees if you come into the wall too tight - which is not good.

PS - you coach should pay more attention to you.
