How do you get rid of stale ciggarette smell?

I recently moved into a new apartment, the rugs were cleaned and it was painted, however, my bedroom reeks of stale ciggarette smell, any ideas how to get rid of the smell?

Someone else mentioned charcoal. I have the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just place a few around problem areas. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

Painting doesn't really get rid of that smell.

Before it was painted the walls and ceiling should have been washed with TSP - then thoroughly rinsed with water. Then it should have been painted with an oil based primer like KILZ before it was painting.

Plus if the person had lived there for ages - that smell is not going to get out of the carpet. The landlord should have replaced the carpet (and cleaned and primed the wood floor underneath)

Plus the heating ducts might need to be cleaned.

I had a real strong smell in my house when we bought it and we had to do all those things.

Most likely your landlord is going to give you a hard time about doing the job right.

Try burning candles, somehow they burn the odor out of the air.

Febreeze.

Bowls of vinegar in the room. I do not know how it works.

I do not know in what manner the rugs were cleaned. I will say shampooing just evens out the stink and stain.

Stanley Steamers is the only truly successful way to clean a carpet. We are not smokers , but they use hot water (their trucks have the heating equipment in them. Then they pump the dirty water outside. It seems like new when they are done.

Leather is organic..DON'T cover it in any plastic or the like..first hang it outside (not in the sun) to air out..might have to do this for several days, then when the smell has dimished..take a soft cloth and cream hair conditioner and gently rub it into the top..you will be surprised at the smoke "dirt" that comes off the garment. Keep this up until the cloth is clean. If smell still persists, repeat the process.

Try wiping your (newly painted) walls, rug, and yes, even your ceiling down with a clorox/detergent solution. Then open your windows for a few days and air out the place.
Oh, and clean the windows too.

Hello Lynn, You can cut up one onion and a small amount of ammonia, BUT, there is a air freshener called OUST , it´s great to get rid of any kind of smell I don´t own one but they say it can rid the smell of skunk, I´m sure it could .I´ts not like the other spray´s it all falls to the ground . NO this one kills all the smells straight away . LOOK it up for yourself .but sure it will get rid of the smell

In a spray bottle add a teaspoon of vinegar and fill the rest with water, mist the carpets. Shampoo the carpet. Chow

most likely the carpets weren't clean properly you will properly have to do them again add some good quality fabric softener to the cleaning solution,wipe the walls down with some lemon juice and water

Leave charcoal in the room until the smell goes away.

Place open bowls of vanilla around the room, I know this works better than anything on the market because i have tried it and it works like magic!
