I have a picture that I want to make into a non tiled background. What dimensions does it need to be to fill the screen without ugly gaps on the margins?

You would need to create the website template with the exact measurements of the graphic. In other words, if your graphic is 700px x 600px, you would need to create your web template the same size, and then center it so that it fits within the content or container area.

You could just right click the image and click 'Set as desktop background'. If its tiled then right click on your desktop, click on properties, then at the top click on Desktop tab...then at the right hand side kind of at the bottom you will see 'Position:' click on the down arrow and click 'stretch'.

If the image is out of porpotion you can try to click on 'center' but you will get the image in the center and whatever color surrounded by it.

If you want to use a photo editor you need to set the dimensions the same as your desktop and make the image fit that dimension. You can find your dimension by right clicking on the desktop click properties...at the top click on the 'Settings' tab and at the bottom left you will see 'Screen Resolution' whatever the little arrow is on that will be your screen size.

Hope this helps.

Theres an image editing program called Irfanview which can automatically fit any picture to your desktop. Its in the "Tools" drop down menu, makes it very easy to change your desktop picture.
