The Ozarks is by far the cheapest place to live in Missouri. Some decent cities in the area are Springfield, Joplin, Rolla, or West Plains. These areas have higher prices than the rest of the area, but they are more convieniently located. I don't know what you are looking for in terms of where you want to live, but I live 30 miles from one of these cities and commute daily. I pay just as much to live in a small town and commute than I do to live in the city itself. Do your homework and I'm sure you'll find something!

I live in Peculiar. There are some cheap places here, but if you go a little further south to Archie or Butler it's even cheaper. Just depends on if you want to live in a metropolitan area or rural area. I like it in the country but I have to drive 30 miles each way to work.

I live in Waynesville, right outside of Fort Leonard Wood, and despite the rural location it's pretty expensive to live here and the cost of new houses in this area is outrageous... however, just down the road in Lebanon it's much cheaper...

Aim for one of the areas away from the big cities and away from the River. Prices tend to be higher in these areas. Try extreme SWMO. Decent living and not terribly expensive.
