Simple-Minded people like for other people, things and concepts to be put into 'categories'.It saves them fom using up their brain cells.
Halle Berry may have more in common by blood type with one of many groups, but people largely believe what they see.
Mariah Carey is variously Puerto Rican or Black, depending on the audience she plays to.
Pretty silly,huh?
Why should either of them be considered anything other than a human being who's chosen acting/entertaining as her career?
We all categorize & putting an end to the practice starts with asking questions like yours.
Good luck.

It was history when Denzel Washington and Halle Berry won in 2002. Halle Berry were the first African Americans women to win Best Female Actress. Halle being biracial and light skinned might have something to do with her winning the award. Usually lighter skin tones are preferred, and darker skin is considered less desirable. Most blacks think Denzel and Halle receiving these award was a blessing and curse. They receive the Oscars for being a dirty cop and a ho. African Americans are so much more than that. Instead of focusing on her race you should be more interested in why not more people of color win these types of awards. Why you and society are obsessed with race? I believe race is defined by what we see. I am sure Halle learn very early in life that she wasn't white enough. She is a beautiful talented African American actress. I am sure she had to deal with some form of racism too. I think Halle's white mom was a very smart woman to rear Halle as a black girl. I think that's what society see her as. We all know how cruel society can be. I think Halle is currently dating a white man. She is very happy in the skin she's in. If Halle wasn't a beautiful famous actress, wouldn't you describe her as a black woman? Biracial or mixed people have to decide for themselves what race they identify with more and what they want to be called. You can't decide that for them.

Although it's a crude way to put it, the guy who said "one drop of 'black' blood = black" wasn't exactly wrong; at least, he accurately described the general social definition of racial minorities in this country. in other words if you have even a little bit of african ancestry people generally consider you black - this dates back to the days of legal segregation etc when there really was a 'one drop" rule. nowadays people have more of a choice on how to define themselves, but i think personally that most people (at least most middle class white americans that i have encountered) think of any black at all = black, period. not necessarily the case with the african-american community; for example i have heard that Barack Obama is being called "not black enough to win the black vote."
if halle berry wants to define herself as black, that's fine, if she wants to define herself as anything else and people persist in calling her black, that's sad and misconstrued on their part.
there does seem to be a very either/or mindset among americans when it comes to race. so... yeah.

After hearing numerous interviews with Halle Berry, she considers herself "a proud black woman."

I am not certain why they do so. I do know that almost every one of us has some african and some caucasian blood in our veigns. I think that she is a wonderful actress and I am glad that she got her grammy. It should not matter whether she is "black" or "white" but that she is a great actress and she was recognized for her wonderful achievements. Have a great weekend.

Interesting question. I've never thought of her as black or as white. When I think of Halle Berry I think "actress".

Most likely for the same reason that most people consider Robert De Niro Italian when really he's mostly Irish.

She looks more Black then biracial, I'm African I know women that are completely African that have similar looks. Plus she says that her mother raised her to see a Black woman when she looks in the mirror because that what society sees.
