IThe exorcism of emily rose is based on the story of a German girl (not Washington as someone said above) called Anneliese Michel.
She started having violent fits in 1968, and was diagnosed with epilepsy at the psychiatric centre in Wurnburg. She started to claim she was seeing devilish images, in her fits in 1970. By the time she was 20 (in 1973) her parents requested an exorcism and were denied it based on the fact she was not speaking in a language she had not learned, and was not adverse to religious objects.
It wasn't until 1975 when she was tearing her clothes off, biting, scratching etc etc, that her exorcism was approved by the Bishop of wurnburg. During the exorcisms they could be so strong she was reportedly held down by 3 men in chains. Among the demons that were claimed to be in her body were Lucifer and Hitler. They carried out 1 exorcism a week on her until 1976, when suffering from pneumonia - her body gave out and she died.
The official cause of death was starvation and Anneliese's parents and exorcists were charged with involuntary manslaughter.

"Based on a true story" doesn't mean the original story actually happened. Many purely fictional stories have used that expression as part of their story-telling, just to give it a little more publicity and reality. Fargo claimed to be based on a true crime ... until the Coen Brothers fessed up about it. The Amityville Horror was based on the stories a financially overwhelmed family made up to get out from under their mortgage (the DeFeo murders did take place there, but there is no evidence that anything the Lutzs claimed actually happened). So I view the story of Anneliese Michel with a grain or two of salt. William Peter Blatty's story The Exorcist is also based on a "true" case of possession, btw.

The Exorcist has nothing to do with the Emily Rose story. It is a book based on "true" story that occured in Washington DC. The film & the book were equally good in my opinion. Emily Rose is cheese compared to it.

I am not certain on this. I heard that it was based on an actual exorcism performed in St. Louis Missouri. The team of exorcists was composed of Jesuit priests. The exorcised person was Lutheran.

The Exorcist is just a story about a girl who is possessed by a demon, not based on anyone specifically.

based on someone else, that person in real life was actually a boy, the book's writer wanted to protect the kid's identity.
