He died on 28 January, 1547, at the relatively young age of 55.

The cause of his death is still a matter of debate; did he have syphilis? He had a strange growth on the side of his nose, but we don't have records that he gave the disease to his wives, mistresses or children.

We know that he began life as a hugely talented, attractive and intelligent man, but he became increasingly cruel, savagely ruthless and a bloated monster. In later life, King Henry was grossly overweight, and possibly suffered from both gout and syphilis. In his younger days, however, he had been a very active man. His increased size dates from a jousting accident in 1536. He suffered a thigh wound which not only prevented him from taking exercise but which gradually became ulcerated and may have indirectly led to his death.

There is still speculation on how he could have turned from the handsome Renaissance prince into the savage, cruel and obese man; it's possible his mind was affected by either syphilis or infections which nobody in those days knew how to treat. His ulcerous leg gave him a lot of pain, and his fifth wife in particular found the stench from it hard to take.

There is still debate about his demise; take a look at the sites below!
