generally, the neighbour who has the fence posts on his side is the owner of the fence - the other side is presented with the 'clean' panel of sheer fencing. However, the legal documents will be with your local council - I'd contact them, it's free of charge and they can probably send you a copy of the plan so you can wave it under your neighbour's nose (assuming you are in the right!).
Yes, pikey neighbours are a bloody nuisance - we have been unfortunate to get a pikey family in our road, their front garden looks like a scrapyard. Grrrrr and double-grrr!

If you pay rent it should be up to Bristol City Council to effect repairs. If your neighbour has broken the fence then I don't think you should be responsible anyway. Check terms and conditions of your tenancy which should be printed on the back of your rent book. Good luck

here in the states if the smooth side of the fence is facing ur yard then the fence belongs to the neighbor. I suggest u call the city council and ask them and also get in writing from them to show ur neighbor IF it is his responsibility

You should check with your landlord regarding your tenancy agreement, your fence should be classed a part of the permanent structure so your landlord should be responsible for the repair, but if your neighbour is actually responsible for the damage shouldn't he pay to get it repaired, a decent neighbour would.

If your neighbours have broken the fence post then sue them for the cost of the damage.
Otherwise, get onto your council and get tough.

Usually its the left side thats your responsibility. But check to see where the fence posts are, if they are on his side then its his fence.
