Arrange the data from low to high.
If there is an odd number of items, the middle item is the 2d quartile. If there is an even number of items, the 2d quartile is the average of the highest low number and the lowest high number.

Example, 1,2,3,4,5 --- 3 is the median or boundary between 2d and 3d quartiles.
1,2,3,4,5,6 ------ 3.5 is the median or boundary between 2d and 3d quartiles.
After you've divided the group in half, you divide each half again to find the other quartile boundaries.
1,2,3,4,5,6 - the first quartile goes from 1 to 2, the second from 2 to 3.5, the third from 3.5 to 5, and the fourth quartile goes from 5 to 6.

According to Yahoo Homework Help,
The Second quartile separates the set into two halves: the numbers that are below the median and the numbers that are above the median.

In other words, the 2nd quartile is just the median
the 1st quartile is the median of the 1st half,
the 3rd quartile is the median of hte 2nd half.
