When a refrigerator is not being used, the door should be taken off so that a child can't get trapped inside and suffocate.

I assume you mean when the frig is unplugged.

If you leave it shut in that siutation, it will almost certainly start smelling really rank inside, because there's bound to be some food still in there from spills.

Another person responded with an even more important point: the door should be removed or at least blocked securly from shutting all the way, otherwise a child could get inside, close the door, and possibly suffocate.

I do HVAC and it doesn't really matter. They will undoubtly begin to stink no matter how clean inside. Years ago I worked for a moving and storage company. I learned a trick, if you take an old nylon or stocking and fill it with coffee grounds and place it in the closed refrig. it will keep the smell down.

Door should be taken off....I agree
But if not, throw a bounce sheet in it, freezer and fridge, and it will keep from getting that nasty smell
