It all depends on how the system is configured. If you get a bare bones system that you just need for word processing or email chekcing then you can get a system for about $600. If you're into hard core gaming and want a top of the line system you can spend up to $7,000 on a desktop or portable. So neiter are cheaper or more expensive than the other b/c it all depends on the specs. If you are getting it for gaming I would reccomend a desktop only because you can't upgrade portables so in three years when new games are coming out you will be able to get a better video card if you need to.

a desktop is always cheaper and more upgradable. When you buy a laptop, you cant really upgrade it besides memory, and you pay more for less power. But you get portablity. So if you need to have a computer on the go, get a laptop. If not then you are spending extra money for a feature you dont need

desktop is cheaper everytime.

the desktop can easily be upgraded and its parts are cheaper in both upgrades and replacements.

laptops have a higher initial cost and replacement parts come at a preimum value. If you don't have a good warranty on your laptop and it something like the mainboard fails after 2 years, chances are you will be looking at spending about $300 for replacement. Plus laptops are just harder to work on.

Desktop everytime will be cheaper.

In most cases a desktop because it is easier to upgrade. The same upgrade for a laptop would cost more, but you sacrifice portability.

when comparing similar specifications (processor, RAM, HD, DVD/CD, memory card reader, # of USB, # of Firewire, audio in/outs, video in/oukts, etc), desktops are almost always cheaper.
you pay more for the compact design of the laptop and often get only a subset of the options of a desktop (but usually the higher end options, but not always).
