I'm purchasing a new motherboard and processor. I was thinking of getting a motherboard with a fsb of 1066MHz. When I was choosing the processor though, I can get a 800MHz one a lot cheaper than a 1066MHz one. Because the processor has a lower bus speed than the motherboard, it will operate at 800fsb right? And how big of a difference does a fsb of 800 compare to that of 1066? Should I just shell out that cash and get the processor with 1066 bus speed?

FSB (or Front Side Bus) is one of the major factors in determining whether or not a system is fast or slow, and how long it take for information to move. If you are trying to get a good gaming computer going or a faster than normal computer, fork out the extra money. If you just want a new motherboard and nothing really special stick with the 800MHz. For all of my customers that I build computers for I recommend the 1066MHz but it is up to them. Eventhough it may not make a large bit of difference now. When they start adding files, deleting files, and using their computer, their system will slow down and they will notice, but with the faster FSB the system won't slow down as fast and will last that much longer before it needs an overhaul.

My old computer’s FSB was 400 MHz and when I bought a new one, the processor’s FSB was 800MHz and let me tell you, the difference was significant. I think 800MHz FSB should suffice depending on what you plan to use your computer for.

Depends on your use, and how much extra cash you want to spend.

FSB is a bottleneck...so if you can afford a mobo with a greater fsb, go for it. If gaming, or using heavy duty applications, go for it.

Common word processing, household use, you wouldn't need it. 800 MHz is plenty.
