Do any of you guys know how Winnie Mandela got to own four million rands- worth of jewelery? We all know that it's not unusual for anything to get stolen in this country, but wouldn't it be nice to know why the same woman who is labeled "South Africa's mother" by some, owns jewelery amounting to this much whilst a large group of her supporters do not even have access to running water/ electricity/ proper medical care/ education. Is this the norm?

of course yes hun - the funds for the nelson mandela's childrens funds scams have long time been one of her chief sources of income. just ask the restaurant owners in cape town, when she frequents their establishments, body guards in tow, firstly expecting them to feed her for free for the "honour" of gracing their doorsteps, then handing over the cheques when they demand payment... if you think jewellry is all she owns, thats not even the cherry on top lol. after all, the mandelas need SOMETHING to spend international monetary aid on don't they? why not jewels? and a few mansions? and mercedes benzes?

Mind you, she & Nelson Mandela divorced in 1996 so i don't think she's benefiting from Mandelas charities! She's got friends in high places internationally so the jewelary could have been gifts. She's not the president or a minister so what is she supposed to do about people without running water???She's only affiliated with the ANCWL.

Correction: Its Winnie MADIKIZELA-Mandela!

Xeek, that has been on my mind for a while as well...
How vain is she to have such an expensive collection of material things? And dumbest beyond dumb, is the fact that she ould so obviously flaunt her wealth in a township!!! as for South Africa's mother, i beg to differ... even though Mirriam Makeba is a singer, i'd rather prefer her being called that, she managed to do so much both in music and politics and hasnt had her name tainted, ever.Norm? i think not... good point, you get a star.

All leaders, in all countries, and their family and friends, get rich.
I don't know why this is because the paycheque isn't that big.
But even Fidel Castro, Born Poor and living under communism (everyone equal) has billions stashed away.

you don't think that all leaders , steal, are corrupt, beleive in graft, pass laws that benefit themselves?? or they just good money managers of their paycheques.??

More appropriately known as the "Mugger of the Nation" and that gives you all the clues you need. Who else could murder, rob and defraud and get away with it but the Mandela's.Can you imagine her and Mugabe together. It would have been a marriage made in Hell and made Amin look like an angel. It never ceases to amaze me that Africans constantly glorify and admire common thugs like her.
