I have my Laptop plugged in but cannot access the Internet through my DSL connection?

My laptop is on my porch and is plugged into a phone jack, no wireless network. My desktop is plugged into an ethernet modem from Embarq

Your desktop works because the phone line comes into the modem and modulates or demodulates the signal from the phone company. This the name MO-DEM. You can not just plug in a phone line to any phone jack in your house and plug the phone line into your laptop.

you must get an ethernet cable, or wireless card and connect to your dsl modem or router this way.

Try running the Network Setup Wizard; that usually fixes the problem for me when I can't connect.
