A bootable cd allows your computer to boot from the cd.

For example:

You have windows XP on your harddrive...if you go into your bios and change the boot sequence to cd-rom before your harddrive it will try to boot from your cd-rom if there is a disc in the drive.

If you put a OS boot disc in the cd-rom and changed the sequence in your BIOS the computer would try to boot from the cd-rom first.

Usually people do this if they wish to re-install / re-format their hard drive and load a new or the same operating system. Once you boot from the disc in your cd-rom drive you can follow the instructions on loading a new OS or repairing the one you have.

I recomed looking to online guides of how to reformat your hard drive with whatever operating system you are trying to load.

No Maliha S, that's not what a bootable CD is. A Bootable CD is a CD which has a boot record descriptor and operating system files (boot file), thus the PC can boot from it unlike a typical boot in which the OS is loaded from the hard drive
