Well, there's quite abit of training and education YOU have to go thru to get that job...

http://www.becjobs.com/JobDetail.asp?jobid=1291 is a link to the Sea World (Busch parks) description for "Associate Animal Trainer. They don't discuss pay... I guess you'd have to ask THEM.

I worked as the sound engineer at Marriott's Great America long ago (1979) when they had a dolphin show, and got to help feed and play with the dolphin.

Good luck

My good friend is a dolphin trainer and she has to work two jobs just to make ends meet. I believe she started off making about $9.00 an hour. I know she makes a little more now, but still stuggles (she has to live with a roommate just so she can pay her rent). So beware, it doesn't pay very well. And just a little side note for you...I am a marine mammal zoologist. I do research on wild killer whales for a living and absolutly LOVE it. I used to want to be a dolphin trainer too, but when I found out about all the trauma, pain, and suffering captive dolphins must endure on a daily basis, I didn't want to be a part of that industry anymore. The animals are literally worked to death purely for human entertainment and for the money. You might want to do a little research about the profession before you decide it's what you really want to do. My friend has been a dolphin trainer for three years now and she's not really happy doing it. She works long hours (often 12 hours a day), she doesn't get paid much, the animals are often cranky and ill tempered (she's been injured several times on the job--dolphins are strong animals and when they're not in the mood to do "tricks", they can be very unpleasant to deal with), and the job is very monotonous (she does the same show day after day and it gets very boring). So being a dolphin trainer doesn't mean you get to play with dolphins all day long and just have fun. It's not all the fun, games, and smiles you experience when you go to a dolphin show. That's a bit of a facade.
After I found out the "dark side" of the captive industry, I decided I wanted to work with the wild animals and I find it to be much more rewarding. When the animals jump and do amazing displays, it's because they CHOOSE to do it, not because they HAVE to do it or won't get their meager dead fish meal for the day. That's no way to treat such a beautiful, intelligent animal. I also love my job because I get to help save the animals and raise awareness about taking care of their environment. I get to educate people about the importance of taking care of our planet and, in turn, taking care of the animals that we love. Education at marine parks is nothing short of bogus...it just doesn't exist.
So do a little research before you make a final choice.
