Is it the underside of the roofing that is black (mildew)? What type winter weather are you in?

On ASK THIS OLD HOUSE This morning they dealt with this very problem. It had to do with the insulation between the lower floors and the attic being poorly done and allowing heat to melt ice on the roof, creating the wet underside to the roof.

They installed new insulation in the attic on top of the old. Unfaced rolls going the opposite direction of the existing.

They also installed a new fan in the attic that corrected the air flow. I honestly was not watching well enough to explain it (I was on Yahoo Answers while it was on.)

Check with a roofing contractor about both. Good Luck.

Sometimes, the black is from mold. Sometimes, the black is from melted asphaltic material such as is in tar paper, shingles, and roof cement which, during very hot weather can become fluid and runn inside the house. Is the wood deck partof the roof plywood or planks laid edge to edge. The edge to edge would indicate an older structure when less stable roofing materials were used which sometimes "run" in hot weather.

go to home depot and buy several canisters of dri-z-air and place them around the attic. After it's dried out, paint the wood with a good mildew cleaner.

Your wood is rotten. Find someone who knows construction, and have them take a look at it.(a contractor if you dont have any friends or family in the trade) This could be a serious problem.
If you have homeowners insurance check to see if they cover this before you pay out of pocket to fix any damage.

My husband is a Carpenter for years and he says it is moisture and you do not have your attic ventilated well enough. There should not be moisture build up in your attic.

Paint it a different color if you don't like black.
