In the State of Connecticut their asking the QUESTION - Should students, many of whom were brought here illegally by their parents, be allowed to go to a state college and pay the lower in state tuition rather than the much higher rate that students from out of state pay?

WTNH’s Blog (http://wtnh.tv/blogs/index.php/anchors/2007/02/23/p638#more638) poses the question above – I feel this should not just be a Statewide question but something brought to a National Level…. Click into their blog above and give them your answer or post them here and I will link you over.

So - What do you all think and feel about this very realistic question????

These kids shouldn't be allowed to attend college here anyway because they're not legally here (assuming they came with their illegal parents, and obviously our system doesn't enforce this). In the case of kids who were born here and have illegal parents, according to the Constitution we must allow these kids to be citizens, and therefore, they are legally allowed to pay the in-state cost.

This makes me feel that we should go back to some of the roots of the problem, which include that part of the Constitution that says if you're born here, you are a citizen automatically. I think we should do away with that. It isn't a bad idea overall, and I'm sure our Founding Fathers had great intentions with that concept. However, times have changed - our population has boomed, and as a result, resources are being used far more. And who has to pay for all this? Tax-paying LEGAL citizens. There are things put in place in our Constitution that may not be practical now and sustain us in the future. We need to be realistic about what works and doesn't.

I'm not a racist, nor am I against immigration (legal that is). I had the privilege of becoming a citizen when I was born here to two immigrants from China. But they followed procedure and respected the laws here. They too did not have a lot of money or education and were looking for better opportunities, but they did so in the way this country asks of non-citizens.

Anyway, that's how I feel. We need to be sustainable.

P.S. Somewhat of a tangent, but another way to get to the root of the issue is to severely punish US companies that hire illegals. If businesses are too scared to hire them, there would be no jobs and they wouldn't come. But since our congresspeople are funded by corporate America, we may never see a crackdown on this. Revolution anyone?!?

being in the US legally on a H1B visa and having become proficient at all the hoops you have to jump through to get visas issued and renewed I do feel for those who feel that have no choice but to come here illegally to earn a living...but should we give them a drivers license? the answer has to be no and who in their right mind would apply for a license if they were here illegally anyway? If the government (at any level) issue them with any sort of ID then they know there are illegal immigrants in the country so surely they have to deport them, right? Again, sorry if you are illegal and living here but I had to go through the process of doing this the proper way, why should you be excused from that? I hope the immigration process is given some sort of focus in the new administration and I don't mean a blanket "illegals out" but something that will truly help keeping people who deserve to be here to work for their slice of the American dream but that also manages to keep the undesirables away.

If the student is in the country illegally, s/he should at least pay out-of-state tuition.
If the student is a US citizen but born to an illegal immigrant, s/he should be treated like any US citizen, in accordance with the law.

No. We have children who want to go to college in 1 year. Twins and we don't know how we are going to pay for it. Our families have been paying taxes, fighting and dying for this country since John Langdon of New Hampshire signed the Bill of Rights. There is no conceivable idea that makes it okay for illegals to get free college educations when middle American tax payers can't afford to send their own kids.

Currently it's a trend for illegals to get instate rates in many states.

Apparently the politicians are looking for future votes.
