Pretty much the "American Civil War". For most other countries, the southern term "War between the States" means nothing (same for most of us Yankees).

It depends on what part of the US you are in. Some call it just the Civil War, or the War Between the States. Some people in the South call it the War of Northern Aggression.
The official international name would probably be the American Civil War.

The only name I have heard is "The American Civil War". You are correct in your statement that many countries have had or are having civil wars of some type, and the victors usually get to name the war.
However, due to the simple republic style formation of our government and the intrinsic checks and balances to ensure that one part of the government does not gain to much power, this has only happened once for us.
Since the federalist government won the war, we only recognize the name "The American Civil War" or "Civil War" for short. If the secessionists would have won the war, the name would have been different.

Reading the answers above, I conclude that the question you posed has a logical error. First, NOTHING can eradicate the history of slavery from the story of the US. It is a fact, plain and simple, that slaves were part of the early history of the nation. The civil war was fought over many issues, including the holding of slaves in southern states, and one effect of the war was to make slavery universally illegal in the US. Racism is an attitude not a condition of life. Attitudes (like racism) can be altered but are usually deeply personal, founded on irrational bias and resist appeals to reason. The current "debate" over abortion is a classic example of this sort of "attitude" wherein one side considers the issue a matter of personal choice and the other a matter of infanticide. Good luck on your essay and remember to be precise in your use of terms and their definitions!
