Its an older versions with the four buttons on the top of the big circle buttin, when i press a button the apple comes on the screen then i immediately shuts off, the battery icon comes on some times with an exclamation mark within a triangle, it wont take a charge from a wall charger or the computer..... has anybody ever had a problem like this, and can you tell me how to fix it?

ipods have been known to have battery problems (the earlier generations whose batteries could not be replaced) and poor soldering of the plug port. I would check if there's been a recall. You may be eligible for a new one.

Switch on "hold". Turn it off and press the center button for 6 seconds. The Apple logo should appear on the screen. If that doesn't get a new iPod.
