Maybe realizing that any sugar in the gum would be picked off by the gum and so the argument is futile? Gum can pull out old fillings, so I'm sure it's strong enough to remove anything it had previously deposited. Maybe he/she was thinking about what would be good for lunch and wished to surveyers would go away so he/she could order.
