First, it all depends on how big your picture files are, to determine the number of them you can put on your memory stick.
Second, 1GB is bigger than 512MB. 1GB=1000MB.

It depends on the quality of your pics, which is directly related to the file size.
512MB is exactly half of 1GB (1024MB).
