My civic '98 is running good. It is just that the temp gauge is stuck in between normal and cold. It doesn't move one milimeter. My heater is blowing cold air and I replaced the thermostat already. Could it be the temperature sending unit?

Could b the Heater Control Valve[if it has one] or the mixer doors under the dash.B sure your Electric Cooling fan(s) aren't running ALL the time.EVEN the heater Core or Heater hoses could B blocked.GOOD idea 2 use the heater EVEN in the summer 4 a few minutes a week-keeps the anti-rust & anti-freeze flowing so the core doesn't get blocked !

The sending unit is telling you it is cold? It is right. All the sending unit is inform you the temperature....it has no control over it.
Look in the engine compartment for the heater hoses. Along one of them you should have a control valve (controlled by a wire that hooks onto the lever of the unit. If you move the controls inside, from cold to hot the lever outside should move. If it doesn't, then it is disconnected behind the dashboard.
As for engine heat, the thermostat is open. Maybe it is very cold out in your area? Put some cardboard in front of the rad. and see if that increases the temp. Otherwise you have a cold thermostat.160 instead of 185.

you may have an air lock in the engine. THIS WILL CAUSE TONS OF DAMAGE! ! !
The temp gauge will not show anything if the sender is not in fluid. It is designed to measure fluid temp not air temp. if there is no fluid circulating through the heater core it can't blow hot air.

check for air bleeders on the top of the engine, near the thermostat housing and perhaps on the opposite end of the motor. they look like a brake bleeder

be aware that this can cause the engine to overheat and warp the head

HELLO I AM A 16 YR MECHANIC AND I WILL TELL YOU THIS YOUR HEATER IS BLOWING COLD AIR CAUSE YOU MORE THEN LIKELY DONT HAVE A THERMOSTAT INTHE THERMOSTAT HOUSEN ONYOUR ENGINE THAT CONTROLS THE TEMPATURE OF THE ENGINE IF YOU REPLACE THE THERMOSTAT IT SHOULD WORK FINE THEN IF THAT DOESNT WORK THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO REPLACE THE HEATER CORE -IT ALSO CONTROLS THE WATER TEMP THAT GOES THROUGH YOU MOTOR AND THE HEAT AND AIR SYSTEM AND YOUR TEMP GUAGE ISNT WORKING CAUSE MORE THEN LIKELY IT COULD OLNY BE 1 OF 3 THINGS.- THE 1ST THIS IS IT COULD BE A BAD SENDING UNIT THAT IS ON YOUR BLOCK OR BY THE THERMOSTAT HOUSEING OR IT COULD BE NUMBER-2. IT COULD BE A BAD TEMP GUAGE AND MIGHT NEED REPLACEING.3 IT COULD BE A BAD GROUND WIRE TO THE INSTROMENT CLUSTER PANEL CHECK THESE THINGS AND IF YOU CANT FIGURE IT OUT THEN PLEASE EMAIL ME AND I WILL DO MY BEST TO HELP YOU FIND AND FIX THE PROBLEM OK -COUNTRYMAN12001@YAHOO.COM. If you have checked that the water level is good then you might have an air lock in the system or a blockage or water pump problem. I would have thought that if water is moving around the engine then your heater should blow warm air regardless of the temp guage problem.

I've not got a civic but I would guess most engines are similar.

i own a shop, and a temperature sending unit wont make it blow cold air, that will make the gage do what its doing, but as far as the heat that could be it low on coolant or the temperature selector isn't working right on it,try checking to see if the heater hoses are both getting warm on it,and if they are you may have a clogged up heater core ,you might be able to just do a real good flush job on it,and refill it and have a good heater in it,the sending unit will cause the gage to act like that ,good luck i hope this help,s.

It's one of two things. It's either your heater core, or your thermostat!

I AM NOT AN EXPERT BUT CHECK YOUR RADIATOR CAP IF ITS LOOSE OR DOESNT FIT PROPERLY THAT COULD BE IT. I HAD THAT PROBLEM WITH A CAR BEFORE I ALMOST FROZE TO DEATH BEFORE MY HUSBAND CHECKED IT,EVEN THOUGH I TOLD HIM TO CHECK BECAUSE THE ONLY THING THAT HADCHANGED WAS WE HAD REPLACED THE RADIATOR.HE WAS ALWAYS HATED IT WHEN I WAS RIGHT.GOOD LUCK.
