I think of all the things someone at that age would want is a large cake and ice cream. With that, do a all the other things that may make the day special, right down to age-joke presents. Things like anti aging creme, a brochure for viagra (for a man), there are so many options.
The key: find out what your friend wants and work to make the day match those!

>Over the hill theme
>50theme- everything is 50- like blow up 50 Dollar bills, 50 balloons in 1 one color, 50 gifts (lots of very very small gifts), etc.
>If it's only the girls.....
Dress up like your parents when they were born (Dress up like You are from 1957, and have a baby doll that can be "her". Heck, you can all have baby dolls that represent you as kids
Play the music popular at that time. If anything, it can be a little fun to do the role reversal. You are an adult NOW- you can play at what is was like being an adult when you were only kids.
>do everything in Silver- as Silver is 50.
>Do the traditional party, but include a party game that involves trivia from 50 years ago.
>do a "This is your life" theme- where you highlight her life, and maybe sneak some old friends she hasn't seen in a while over. To do the surprise visit- just like the old TV show.
"And do you recognize this voice?"...... I liked seeing old re-runs of that show. It was very cool.

My wife threw me a "Margaritaville/Islander" party. It was awesome! Everybody came dressed in Hawaiian prints, she draped an outdoor canopy with palm tree fronds from cheap hula skirt costume material. The place was decorated with parrots and palm trees. She made CD's with lots of Beach boys, Jimmy Buffet, calypso, some reggae and borrowed blenders (poor thing was stuck making margaritas for most of the party). She had ordered food from a Chinese/Filipino restaurant, lots of fried fish, shrimp, rice, lumpia, pansit and so on. The decorations were all easily available at a couple Party City type stores. It was the best party I ever had, I love that woman!
