Can anyone tell me what the problem is and whether it is going to be expensive to repair. The rev counter is on 500 when it's stationary and I haven't noticed it was that low before. Is that normal?

The oil is probably from a leaking valve cover gasket, not very expensive usually. Any good shop can do it.

The low idle is another story though, and the shop needs to find out why it isn't idling right...maybe easy fix, maybe more to it. Just have them investigate and give you a full estimate first...

If this is a V6 then it could be the valley gasket which is leaking rather than one of the rocker gaskets.

If, however, the oil is on the tips of the plugs (firing ends) then you may well have a head gasket problem, which would explain the low idle.

If not, then the low idle is another story altogether. It depends on whether it happens during warm up, after warm up, or at all engine temps.

It could be the idle control valve bunged up, in which case it requires removing and cleaning out.

If it only happens whilst the engine is hot then it could be a faulty O2 sensor.

It happens at all engine temps or only whilst the engine is cold then you could have a problem with the ECT (Engine Coolant Temp) sensor.

If there is black smoke then the EGR valve or the MAP sensor could be at fault.

We really need more info on the idle problem before we can help you out properly.

Best wishes

The way ur explainning it sounds like ur getting oil on the top of ur plugs i say this because u say ur leads get oiled up as well, if so check the rocker box nuts r tight, if it is leaking from rocker box u will see oil escaping from top of engine running down the engine. If ur plugs are oiled up at spark end then the leads shouldnt get oiled up, if indide then its either worn or broken rings, broken piston but car would run terribly, head gasket failure, valve stem oil seal.

But as u say ur leads r oiled up as well then it has to be a simple tighten up the rocker box or u may ned to fit a new rocker gasket.

I'd suggest its your rocker cover gasket that needs to be replaced, the low idle speed could be a problem with the fuel mix thats in the engine, does it surge or hunt for fuel when stationary? One fix is to adjust the accelerator cable to alter the idle speed, with high mileage cars the cable can stretch slightly but be careful overtightening it could cause the cable to break which could cost £100 plus just for the cable. You should be idling around 750 to 1000 when warm.

If you don't know the proper torque for the bolts or don't have a way of measuring it, don't attempt to tighten them. If you twist one off the cost to repair will more than double.

ok be fore you run out an spend money a a val gaste, try to tighting the bol in most cases , over a time it will heat up an cool off, an the bolt will back off, so get then a few turn

the oil is proberbly coming from the top cover gasket.
reasonably cheap to bay and not hard to fit
