The Penguins, I believe, are in the New Jersey Devils division. The top 3 teams in a conference are always the division leaders. The Lightning are third and Penguins are fourth, because the Lightning are in a different division then the Penguins. The Lightning are leading their division, but have less points than the other 2 division leaders (Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils) so they are in 3rd, or last of the division leaders. Penguins are in fourth unless they pass New Jersey, than they'll automatically be in the top 3. It also determines the seeds in the playoffs like this. Points isn't everything, it's also winning your division, because you may have 10 wins, and 20 points the whole season, but if everyone has less than 10 wins, you can still make the playoffs because they are ahead of their own division.. hopefully you understand this, tried to give a lot of details/examples.

There are 6 Divisions and the top team of each division gets an automatic spot for the playoffs. Then the last 5 playoff spots available go by point ranking. So if you are not a division leader, your main goal is to win because you could go from 3rd for playoff spots to out of the playoffs, its a crazy system, but I think it makes the sport more interesting....

Because Tampa Bay is in first place in their division and Pittsburgh is in second place in their division. Each division leader is guaranteed a top 3 seed in their respective conferences.

cause there r 3 divisions in a conference
each division leader gets 1, 2, or 3. (done by total amount of points)
Penguins are in 4th because they are behind the Devils but are ahead of all other teams besides other division leaders.

The Standings go by Divisons, although the Penguins have 75 Pts the Divison Leaders get a higher ranking, I personally dont like how they do that.
