Read a lot and learn how other writers construct plot structures, create dialogues, describe scenes, keep the readers’ attention, etc. This is also one good way to sharpen your vocabulary and communication skills, crucial factors for good writing.

Write about anything that fancies you. Keeping a journal and setting a daily regular time just for writing are good. Writing is like exercise. You build writing muscle with experience.

Then, choose a niche. Would you like to write fiction, poetry or non-fiction?

Get objective opinion for your work. Look for a writer in your area. Even your old english teacher could be a good judge. There are also workshops that you could apply for but they are usually competitive.

Find out what sells in the field you chose—what readers and publishers want. Get copies of possible publications you’d like your work to get published in so you would get a feel as to what they want.

Submit for publication. If you get published in a reputable magazine or paper, it means you have what it takes to become a good writer.

One of the best things you can do to become a good writer is to be an avid reader. You begin to get a sense of what good writing is and isn't. Join literary discussion groups. Take some creative writing classes. Start writing. Not so much for publication, but for yourself. It can be a semi-journal. Write down your thoughts, feelings, perceptions, fantasies, and anything else that strikes you at the moment. Some of these random writings may lead to a story or novel.

To be a writer, you'll first need to know how to write. Learn how to write properly in all contexts, including right here in Yahoo Questions. Capitalize the first letter of the first word in a sentence. Put a space after the question mark. Capitalize "I" when referring to yourself. Make it a habit to write correctly, no matter what you are writing or who your audience is. Keep a style manual handy.

Have to learn to write and rewrite, and rewriting is the most important thing. Even if you make mistakes on your writing, then print what you wrote and read it and read and make changes when you feel it is much better.

Forget who the well know novelist said that he could sit and write 20 pages and when he went back to read it, he was happy if there was a great sentence or a paragraph, he would throw out the rest.

Just write something. Remember that writing something good takes a lot of work. If you're not happy with something, don't be afraid to revise it. Be sure to get some friends to read it and tell you what they think.
