You can buy waterproof pads (we call them Piddle Pads haha) for that purpose. Some are even fitted (with pockets like a bottom sheet) but the thickness can make it hard to get a sheet on top.

Also, one of my mattresses came wrapped in plastic. I just left the plastic on, and that keeps the mattress pretty well-protected. I suppose if you could find a garbage bag big enough, you could wrap it in a garbage bag.

You can buy plastic covers for the mattress, or special mattress pads that are waterproof. You can get them at Target, Babies R Us, places like that.

All baby mattress have a vinyal coting on them already. However you can buy additional vinyal covers, however I prefer a vynal backed mattress pad as it helps hold the wetness, so if you have a ,leaky diaper you wont be wiping down the mattress at 2 am. Try babies r us

If you mean a crib mattress then I suggest buying different diapers because the ones that your putting on your baby are to small or ill-fitted. I had the same problem when I used huggies on my baby because they didnt fit her right and fit to small even though on the box they were listed as being the right size for her. My babies diapers never leak when I put her in pampers or even safeway select brand.

I take a sheet then cover it with a plastic sheet then put another sheet on top. That way if the top sheet gets wet I can just pull it off and take off the plastic one. It's a lot easier at 3 in the morning to do this then put a whole new sheet on.

they have plastic sheets that you can put underneath a regular sheet. Also, we bought a baby sealy. It was fifty bucks a kmart or walmart, and it's made out of plastic (the exterior). All I have to do is wipe it down w/ lysol every few days and then w/ water, and it's good to go.
