It basically means your like a puppet, or a subservient to someone else. For instance many people think Tony Blair is a Goerge Bush lap dog.

I no longer have a dog because he got out of the backyard a long time ago. I now live in an apartment, where there are no dogs allowed. Although I do not have a dog, that does not mean I lack knowledge. Back when I had my dog, I always told him that I loved him. I do not find it weird at all whatsoever. The dog may not be able to understand what your saying, but it can sense the loving energy coming from you.

This was a term used in medieval times when the rich would keep a small dog on there lap.
The dogs body tempreture is slightly higher than that of a human so fleas would be attracted to it
then the dog was bathed to remove the fleas
thus keeping the dogs owner Flea Free

I heard that a lap dog is a small dog that was bred to keep ladies legs warm in the olden days when they travelled in horse drawn carriages. The King Charles Cavalier is one example of a dog bred for this purpose.

The term originated as, literally, a dog small enough that it can comfortably lie on one's lap. The connotation of it being a pampered creature obsequious to its master and depending on his/her approval has carried over to people who appear to be kept as pets by other, more dominant, affluent people.
