changing tank over from the south american chiclids to the african variety which requires a higher ph level. Is my rope fish going to be able to adjust to the higher ph levels required for this transition?

As Bzzflygirl said, your ropefish can do fine in the pH you are changing to in the tank. The key is to change it slowly. Try adding crushed coral to the tank and also in the filter where you would normally put your carbon for a week of so. That should raise it slowly but steadily. You will also need to be able to raise the pH of your tap water when you do water changes if the pH and hardness of the tap water is low. You can do this the same way, by placing it in a container with cruched coral for a few days or with various chemical additives from the pet store. You are in a way quite lucky, while moving pH and hardnes down quickly is difficult, moving it up quickly with chemicals is easy and effective.

What's your ph at now? Raise it slowly. Ropefish do live from 6-8 in the wild and can do the whole range of 5-9.
