The best meal to eat is pasta. That being saidyou need to eat it like 3 or 4 hours before your game. When I billeted OHL hockey players they always wanted their meal around 330 for a 730 game. This gives their body time to digest the meal and get the energy from the food into their system. Then having a granola bar and some fruit or a protein bar closer to game time is acceptable.

When I played, I had 2 items I ate before a game. One has been suggested by many, which is pasta. The carbohydrates in pasta do a great job of providing energy through a game.
The second is my go to food: bananas. There are carbs in bananas. The potassium in bananas is the real secret, though. It helps with leg cramps (mostly in the calfs) that develop later in games. Works really well.
Whatever you eat, it MUST be in moderation. Eating too much before a game, in my experience, makes you feel sluggish, almost weighed down.
Good luck!

I billeted players from the Toledo IceDiggers (NAHL, Junior A) and the Toledo Cherokee (CSHL, Junior B) for several years. They requested pasta (tomato sauce, butter/garlic, alfredo) the night before the game and then again for lunch (several hours before the game). All my "boys" have gone on to play college hockey, so there may be something to it.

I used to eat a tuna sandwich on rye two-four hours before game time. I think it really helped me out, I don't know why, but I felt like I played good every time I did this.

I used to have a book called Orr on Ice and Bobby Orr says it's steak. If you think about it, he's probably right. Steak is a good meal anytime I figure.

Nothing too heavy because the exertion could make you sick. I would eat a protein bar or something of that sort.
